Day 25: Making Suggestions and Offering Help in Korean
Day 25: Making Suggestions and Offering Help in Korean
Welcome to Day 25 of your Korean language journey! Today, we’ll focus on how to make suggestions and offer help in Korean.
In Korean, making suggestions and offering help is essential for polite conversation. Whether you want to offer assistance to a friend or suggest something to do, knowing how to express these ideas politely will improve your ability to communicate and build good relationships.
By the end of today’s lesson, you’ll know how to make suggestions, offer help, and politely ask if someone needs assistance.
1. Making Suggestions in Korean (제안하기)
When you want to make a suggestion in Korean, the most common way is to use the verb -자 (-ja), which means “let’s” in English. This form is used to suggest an activity or invite someone to do something together.
The basic structure for making suggestions is:
[Verb Stem] + -자 (-ja) – Let’s [verb].
Examples:
-
가다 (gada) – to go → 가자 (gaja) – Let’s go
-
공원에 가자. (Gongwon-e gaja.) – Let’s go to the park.
-
-
먹다 (meokda) – to eat → 먹자 (meokja) – Let’s eat
-
밥 먹자. (Bap meokja.) – Let’s eat rice (meal).
-
-
하다 (hada) – to do → 하자 (haja) – Let’s do
-
운동하자. (Undonghaja.) – Let’s exercise.
-
-
보이다 (boida) – to show → 보자 (boja) – Let’s show
-
그 영화를 보자. (Geu yeonghwareul boja.) – Let’s watch that movie.
-
Note: You can also make a suggestion more polite by adding -요 (-yo) to the end of the verb phrase:
-
가요 (gayo) – Let’s go (polite)
-
먹어요 (meogeoyo) – Let’s eat (polite)
-
하자요 (hajayo) – Let’s do (polite)
2. Making Suggestions with "How About" (어때요?)
Another way to make a suggestion or ask for an opinion is by using 어때요? (eottaeyo?), which means "How about?" or "What do you think?"
Structure:
[Activity] + 어때요? (eottaeyo?) – How about [activity]?
Examples:
-
영화를 봐요. (Yeonghwareul bwayo.) – How about watching a movie?
-
저녁을 먹어요. (Jeonyeogeul meogeoyo.) – How about eating dinner?
You can use 어때요? (eottaeyo?) to ask for someone’s opinion about a plan or idea.
Examples:
-
영화를 보는 거 어때요? (Yeonghwareul boneun geo eottaeyo?) – How about watching a movie?
-
같이 운동하는 거 어때요? (Gachi undonghaneun geo eottaeyo?) – How about exercising together?
3. Offering Help in Korean (도움 제공하기)
Offering help in Korean is a way of showing politeness and consideration. There are a few key phrases to use when offering help:
-
돕다 (dopda) – to help
-
도와줄게요. (Dowajulgeyo.) – I will help you.
-
제가 도와줄게요. (Jega dowajulgeyo.) – I will help you (polite).
-
-
필요하다 (piryohada) – to need
-
도움이 필요해요? (Doumi piryohaeyo?) – Do you need help?
-
필요하면 말해 주세요. (Piryohamyeon malhae juseyo.) – If you need help, please let me know.
-
-
제가 할게요. (Jega halgeyo.) – I’ll do it.
-
이 일은 제가 할게요. (I il-eun jega halgeyo.) – I will do this task.
-
-
도와주실래요? (Dowajusillaeyo?) – Can you help me? (polite)
-
이것 좀 도와주실래요? (Igeot jom dowajusillaeyo?) – Can you help me with this?
-
4. Offering Suggestions and Help in a Group Setting
If you’re in a group and want to suggest doing something or offering help collectively, you can use 우리 (uri) – we or us, to make the suggestion more inclusive.
Examples:
-
우리 같이 가자! (Uri gachi gaja!) – Let’s go together!
-
우리 함께 먹자! (Uri hamkke meokja!) – Let’s eat together!
-
우리 모두 도와줄 수 있어요. (Uri modu dowajul su isseoyo.) – We can all help!
5. Asking for Help (도움 요청하기)
If you need help and want to ask for it politely, you can use the following phrases:
-
도와주세요. (Dowajuseyo.) – Please help me.
-
저를 도와주세요. (Jeoreul dowajuseyo.) – Please help me.
-
-
도와주실 수 있나요? (Dowajusil su innayo?) – Can you help me? (polite)
-
이것을 도와주실 수 있나요? (Igeoseul dowajusil su innayo?) – Can you help me with this?
-
-
좀 도와줄래요? (Jom dowajullae-yo?) – Can you help me a little?
-
저를 좀 도와줄래요? (Jeoreul jom dowajullae-yo?) – Can you help me a little?
-
6. Practice Offering Suggestions and Help
Let’s practice using the phrases we’ve learned today. Try creating sentences with suggestions and offers of help:
-
How about going to the beach?
해변에 가는 거 어때요? (Haebyeon-e ganeun geo eottaeyo?) -
Let’s eat lunch together.
우리 같이 점심 먹자! (Uri gachi jeomsim meokja!) -
I’ll help you with that.
제가 도와줄게요. (Jega dowajulgeyo.) -
Do you need help with this?
이거 도와줄 필요 있어요? (Igeo dowajul piryoh isseoyo?) -
Can you help me carry this?
이거 들어줄 수 있어요? (Igeo deureojul su isseoyo?)
7. Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Using Informal Speech When Offering Help:
When offering help to someone older or in a formal setting, make sure to use polite language (존댓말, jondaetmal). Using informal language might come off as rude. -
Overusing "우리 (uri)" in Formal Settings:
While 우리 (uri) is a great way to make suggestions in a group, avoid using it too often in formal situations where more individual speech is expected. -
Confusing "도와주다 (dowajuda)" and "도와주다 (dowajusida)":
Remember that 도와주다 (dowajuda) is the standard way of saying "help" in informal settings, but 도와주다 (dowajusida) is for more formal situations.
What’s Next? (다음은 무엇인가요?)
Tomorrow, in Day 26, we’ll be learning about making comparisons in Korean. You’ll learn how to compare objects, people, and situations using adjectives and verbs!
