Korean Restaurant Kiosk Guide: 25 Buttons Explained in English

A café kiosk in Korea has no English option. You want takeaway, but the screen says 매장, 포장 and 담기. Which should you tap? This practical Korean vocabulary guide explains 25 common labels, a sample order, and what to say if payment gets stuck. You can use it while standing at the machine.

Before you tap: Screens vary by brand, location and software version. The words below are common Korean interface labels, not a promise that every kiosk uses the same steps or accepts every card.
매장 Eat in
포장 Take away
담기 Add to cart

Three decisions that prevent most mistakes

  1. 매장 or 포장? Choose 매장 to eat in or 포장 for takeaway. Some machines ask this before showing the menu; others ask later.
  2. 단품 or 세트? Check whether you want one item or a combo. A 세트 may cost more and include a drink or side.
  3. 담기 before 결제하기. Add the item to your cart, confirm 수량 and 주문내역, then proceed to payment.

Two small mistakes to avoid

Ordering twice: After a payment attempt, look for an order number, receipt or confirmation screen before tapping pay again. If uncertain, ask staff to confirm the order.

Choosing the wrong service type: If you selected 매장 but need takeaway, ask a staff member whether they can switch the order. Do not assume you can change it after payment.

If your card fails or the kiosk asks for a Korean phone number

An overseas card may work at a staffed counter but fail at an individual unattended terminal. Payment support depends on the machine, merchant and card. Do not retry indefinitely or assume the payment has failed if you see an approval message.

  1. Read the message on the screen; if you are unsure whether payment went through, ask staff to check before paying again.
  2. Try another supported card only if the terminal clearly reports that the payment was declined.
  3. If the screen requests a phone number for optional loyalty points, look for 건너뛰기 or a skip/no-membership choice. Some screens may not allow skipping.
  4. If it is genuinely required for an order, ask staff whether they can place the order at the counter. Not all businesses have that option.

Five Korean phrases when you need help

이거 어떻게 해요?How do I do this?
포장하려고 해요.I would like this to go.
이거 빼 주세요.Please leave this out.
카드 결제가 안 돼요.My card payment is not working.
주문됐는지 확인해 주세요.Could you check whether my order went through?

Mini practice: can you finish this order?

You are eating inside. 매장 or 포장?

매장. It means dine-in.

You want a single burger, not a combo. 단품 or 세트?

단품. It refers to a single item.

You finished choosing. What does 담기 do?

It adds your chosen item to the cart; it does not necessarily complete payment.

The kiosk asks about loyalty points. What might let you skip?

건너뛰기, if the machine offers that option.

Common questions

Does 포장 mean delivery?

No. At a café or restaurant kiosk, 포장 usually means you collect the food to take away. Delivery is usually 배달.

Does 담기 mean I have paid?

No. 담기 usually adds an item to your order. Check 주문내역 and proceed to 결제하기 to reach payment.

Can I always pay with an overseas card?

No. Card acceptance varies by kiosk, payment processor and card. Ask staff before making repeated attempts if the result is unclear.

Do I need a Korean phone number?

Not always. A number prompt may be for optional points or notifications. If there is no skip option, ask staff what the number is needed for.

Keep this guide open at the kiosk: first choose 매장 or 포장, then check 단품 or 세트, add items with 담기, review 주문내역, and only then proceed to 결제하기.
